Instant Messaging

If you have never used an instant messenger before, the following explanation should help!

What is an instant messenger?

It is a program that runs on your computer and lets you know when friends, family members or business associates are using the Internet at the same time you are. If they are, it allows you to contact them to see if they want to have a "conversation", by typing messages and "chatting" with each other.

How is this different from email?

You don't have to wait for a response! You type to each other in real time. The other person is actually reading your message as soon as you type it and hit the "Enter" key, allowing you to have an online conversation.

Why do I need to be able to Chat or Instant Message?

Sometimes email isn't fast enough. You might not know if a person you want to email is online at that moment. If you're emailing back and forth with someone, you usually have to click through a few steps. This is why instant messaging (IM) has become so popular.

Getting Started

The first thing you need to do if you want to instant message is to make sure you sign in to your IM or Chat.  You should also set your status.  Most IM services allow you to set your status as "available", "busy", "invisible", or your own personalized message.   Others can see your status and if you are available, they can instant message you.

With IM, you can keep a list of people you interact with. You can IM with anyone on your buddy list or contact list as long as that person is online.  You can see your contacts that are online and available to chat.   For more specific information on your specific email service, see the appropriate link at the bottom of this page.
