What is Flickr?

Flickr is one of the most popular photo storage and sharing sites.  It is free and easy to use, and it features many methods for sorting, categorizing, and tagging images.  It also is widely used by bloggers to host images that they embed in blogs and social media.  As of October 2009, Flickr claims to host more than 4 billion images.

Pros

  • Free
  • Easy to use
  • Options for securing your photos
  • Great tagging and organizing system
  • Can be incorporated into personal blogs and Web sites
  • Can use Creative Commons copyright licenses with photos

Cons

  • Easy for visitors to steal public photos
  • Must pay for unlimited storage
  • Users must have a Yahoo! account

Types of Accounts:

Free

  •  Users are allowed to upload 100 MB of images a month and 2 videos.
  •  Users will only be able to see the most recent 200 in their photostream.
  •  Other photos that were uploaded are still stored on the site and links to these images in blog posts remain active.
  •  Users can also contribute to a maximum of 10 photo pools.
  •  If a free account is inactive for 90 consecutive days, it will be deleted.

Pro

  • Users may load an unlimited number of images and videos every month.
  • Users receive unlimited bandwidth and storage.
  • Photos may be placed in up to 60 group pools.
  • Pro account users receive ad-free browsing.
  • Users have access to account statistics.

Copyright and Privacy

Security and privacy is a major factor. Public photos, unless you specifically add a watermark on your own, can be borrowed by anyone. To avoid that, you can make all or some pictures private or only available to friends and family (who must also join Flickr). You can also incorporate your chosen Creative Commons copyright license to inform people of usage rights, but that doesn't mean people will abide by it.
